From BBC Sport
I was surprised by all the English complaining after the defeat. England, of all people, the motherland of fair play ideas,” Blatter said.
I’ll admit, if you asked to come with a description of England, “the motherland of fair play ideas” would not be one of them. I wonder what they statement is based on, considering the crazy way the FA handles managerial fines, player suspensions and appeals.
“Now some of them are showing themselves to be bad losers.”
Blatter told Swiss magazine Weltwoche: “You can’t come afterwards and say so and so promised to vote for England. The results are known. The outcome came out clearly.”
Sure did. The problem is that the result is nonsense Sepp. Losers, sure. Bad Losers? No.
And I’m Irish. If I thought the English were being bad losers, I’d say so. I don’t like some of the rhetoric being thrown around by them, that they were entitled to it, but they have a right to complain about the awful bidding process.
Blatter, 74, said the reaction of the losing bidders showed some did not understand his drive to expand football’s frontiers.
“I really sense in some reactions a bit of the arrogance of the Western world of Christian background. Some simply can’t bear it if others get a chance for a change,” he said.
I have no idea what Christianity has to do with this. And non-Western countries have been hosting this tournament for a while.
“What can be wrong if we start football in regions where this sport demonstrates a potential which goes far beyond sport?”
Nothing, as long as those nations are actually capable of hosting the tournament. And football is the most popular sport on the planet, and is the most popular sport in both Russia and Qatar. You’re not starting anything.
Blatter stated that Fifa could not act as if nothing had happened, adding he wanted to set up a taskforce to look into compliance issues, without giving details.
“We need to improve our image. We also need to clarify some things within Fifa,” he said.
I imagine what they “need to clarify” is that if you’re accepting bribes, make sure no media outlets find out about it.
“There is no systematic corruption in Fifa. That is nonsense,” he said. “We are financially clean and clear.”
Seriously, sometimes I wonder how no one has decided to take a shot at this man.
Also, BBC’s “What do YOU reckon?” addition from some commenter:
I feel so angry with this man. England have not been moaning about not getting the World Cup.
Oh for goodness sake. England have been doing nothing but moan about not getting the World Cup. Your Prime Minister brought it up in your Parliament and your FIFA rep resigned. I’m not even saying your wrong to complain, but don’t pretend like your being victimised to this extent.
