Manchester United vs Ajax: Europa League Preview (Lovely Left Foot)

It has been a bad season by Manchester United’s standards. Defending champions, they trail their great rivals in the English league, exemplified by that astounding 6-1 loss at Old Trafford. Out of the League Cup to Crystal Palace, out of the FA Cup to Liverpool. And out of the Champions League, a 2-1 loss to Basel the final act to a mediocre run in the top European competition.

It has been a bad season by the standards of Ajax Amsterdam. Defending champions, trailing badly in the Eredivisie (7th at time of writing), out of the KNVB Cup to AZ three rounds in, out of the Champions League after failing to put any goals past Lyon or Real Madrid.

Both teams have also suffered from media attention to off field issues recently, the Evra/Suarez affair for United and the bizarre war at the top administrative levels for Ajax, things that have distracted from the business on the pitch. Both teams known for top class youth set-ups, for attractive attacking football.

And now these two teams come to face each other in the Europa League, coming from oddly similar situations.
