Kildare North: Seventh, Eighth And Final Counts

The count is, of course, actually finished at this point, but for the sake of completeness I’m still going to through them all one by one so we can have a look at how things panned out at every stage. Count Seven, with the redistribution of Ni Fhalluin’s votes, went like this:

Murphy (SD): 11108 (Elected)

Lawless (FF): 8256 (+253)

O’Rourke (FF): 7138 (+259)

Durkan (FG):  6740 (+206)

Lawlor (FG): 6046 (+279)

Stagg (LAB): 5181 (+549)

Cronin (SF): 4497 (+351)

Ni Fhalluin (G): 2419 (Eliminated)

Young (IND): 1858 (Eliminated)

FitzGerald (R): 1236 (Eliminated)

Merriman (A-P): 943 (Eliminated)

Beirne (IND): 389 (Eliminated)

Dunne (IND): 261 (Eliminated)

O’Sullivan (IND): 119 (Eliminated)

Which put visually is like this:

A fair portion to Stagg, but nothing that would really help him. Same for Cronin, who needed a bounce to survive but didn’t get it. A fairly ever distribution otherwise.

Onto Count Eight, and Cronin’s distribution of 4497 votes, which went thusly:

Murphy (SD): 11108 (Elected)

Lawless (FF): 8850 (+594)

O’Rourke (FF): 7684 (+546)

Durkan (FG):  6974 (+234)

Lawlor (FG): 6213 (+167)

Stagg (LAB): 5775 (+594)

Cronin (SF): 4497 (Eliminated)

Ni Fhalluin (G): 2419 (Eliminated)

Young (IND): 1858 (Eliminated)

FitzGerald (R): 1236 (Eliminated)

Merriman (A-P): 943 (Eliminated)

Beirne (IND): 389 (Eliminated)

Dunne (IND): 261 (Eliminated)

O’Sullivan (IND): 119 (Eliminated)

Which looks like this:

So, Cronin’s left wing supporters meant her surplus went to Stagg, though nowhere near enough to make a difference, and her anti-government support meant much of the rest went to the two Fianna Fail candidates. And with that, an end to Stagg’s Dail career.

The last count then, with Stagg’s distribution of 5775 votes:

Murphy (SD): 11108 (Elected)

Lawless (FF): 9444 (+594)

Durkan (FG):  8890 (+1916)

O’Rourke (FF): 8479 (+795)

Lawlor (FG): 7402 (+1189)

Stagg (LAB): 5775 (Eliminated)

Cronin (SF): 4497 (Eliminated)

Ni Fhalluin (G): 2419 (Eliminated)

Young (IND): 1858 (Eliminated)

FitzGerald (R): 1236 (Eliminated)

Merriman (A-P): 943 (Eliminated)

Beirne (IND): 389 (Eliminated)

Dunne (IND): 261 (Eliminated)

O’Sullivan (IND): 119 (Eliminated)

Which makes the final shake-up look like this:

The biggest transfer of the count bumped Durkan up from fourth to third, while ending Lawlor’s then slim hopes. This was the only position change of the entire count. With his elimination, there were only enough candidates left as seats, and so Lawless, Durkan and O’Rourke were all elected without reaching the quota.

When I have the time I’ll do a write up on my thoughts for each candidate in terms of how their count went, their transfers, whether they should be pleased or disappointed, and where their political careers go from here. And, I suppose, a few thoughts on the national picture. Until then.
