Due to the unforseen press intrusion into my life and into the lives of my family and friends, I wish to announce that I am withdrawing myself as a candidate for the Irish Presidential race.
This decision has not been an easy one. It has been a long and difficult road ever since I threw my hat into the ring on Monday. But the firestorm of publicity, coupled with the smear campaign being run against me, have convinced me that the prize is not worth it.
I fully believe that I not only would have gained the requisite number of Oireachtas members to run, but that I would have won the Presidency. It is unfortunate that the whims of a small few, with pens as their weapons, have denied the Irish people this.
I wish I could say that I bear no ill-will towards the other candidates, but that would be a total lie. The only one that I have nothing specific against is Mary Davis, but I’m sure that if I got to know her, I would find something.
I would like to thank all of my campaign staff, that is, me. They deserve all the credit in the world for their perseverance, their loyalty, their stunning good looks, all of it. I could not have come this far without them.
So, I step from the public shadow, gone but I hope not forgotten. As the great bard once said:
