Interesting game. Nether side really exerted the kind of influence they wanted on it, and it was played in a very lackadaisical manner.
Not much to tell. Ferguson changed United’s formation up, and it didn’t work, Southampton having much the better of the first half. Gibson was poor, Smalling was poor. Lindegaard, in his debut, was average, having little chance with the Saints goal.
It took the arrival of Giggs and Nani to change things up and they did so with relish. Southampton had tired from the first half effort and were undone by two slick moves and two great finishes. Hernandez remains a solid forward, working hard for every ball and its good to see Owen get on the scoresheet. The Saints had nothing left after the second. From there it was just keepball. The fact that Southampton couldn’t fill their stadium tonight is probably a measure of the interest they had.
United march on to face non-league Crawley in the next round. Big game for them, though Old Trafford will be far from full and Fergie will have a good few kids out. Of course I expect a victory, but its the FA Cup. I don’t mean magic, I mean a tired, uninterested United team playing a side that will never be in such a big stage. Best time to play United.
