Really should have been a higher scoreline. United dominated, but the concern is that they failed to completely kill the game off within 20 minutes, taking only one of a staggering number of chances. It was a great team goal for Berba’s first, but the team just could not translate their total dominance on the field into more goals.
Once Berba’s deflected effort gave United some breathing room, the game just fizzled out. Both teams were playing again within 48 hours, Sunderland knew it would take an almighty effort to get back into it, United knew they pretty much had it sown up, so why bother?
Rooney played well but is still unable to get the ball in the net. The defence was solid when it needed to be and it was all just very run of the mill. Berbatov sould have scored more, but he’ll be happy with his lot.
Park is gone for at least a few weeks due to the Asian Cup in Qatar and that’s a bad loss, unless players like Anderson and Nani can fill the gap the pacy Korean will leave.
United topped the table at Christmas, which was a surprise after what must be called a lacklustre start to the season. Way too many draws and poor performances. Thanks to Chelsea’s sudden implosion and that unbeaten the Devils now find themselves with the advantage heading into the new year with Arsenal and Man City looking like bigger threats then the reigning champions. Time will tell.
