It’s taken a criminally long time for the Iraqi parliament to make a government…and to re-elect the same guy as Prime Minister.
This extended drama in the Parliament, just trying to form a government that really cannot be described as that powerful, has taken up, nearly a fifth of its term. All the while, things in Iraq continue to unravel with spiking violence levels and the breakdown of the “Awakening”.
It’s not good. There are simply too many factors working against the “stable democratic Iraq” outcome here. They need a stronger government, better policing, an increased quality of life for its people, the balls to stand up to Iranian meddling and some allies that are closer than two oceans away.
And I’m not convinced they can get any of those things.
