The idea of a “Champions League hangover” is very much a reality as this game demonstrated. Just a game that United didn’t seem to interested in winning, barring a brief spell of dominance in the second half.
That is not to take away a good pressing performance from Sunderland, who had the better chances but failed to convert any of them. Sunderland appear to be a team that has the talent to get above mid-table/relegation battle obscurity, but just has to find the consistency to actually do it.
As it is, Owen will be desperately disappointed with his performance (and service) on his fast start in months as will Macheda, who looks more and more like a one-hit wonder. An international break now, and a chance for some (Scholes, Giggs, Vidic, Berba) to rest up. Badly needed as we begin to enter to insanely packed schedule of the end of the year.
