Afghanistan: Petraeus Gets Ready

So, General Petraeus has given testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee on his opinions and plans for Afghanistan in the coming year. The highlights:

-The July 2011 deadline is only the beginning of the withdrawals not the “abandon ship” date some are making it out to be.

-A tactical reassessment is coming (read: airstrikes are back on the table)

-Things are better in Afghanistan right now then they were 10 years ago (Literacy, Immunization all up, etc).

-Afghan forces to be heavily involved in the coming year (unlike the Iraq surge).

-The Afghan war is worth fighting but it’s going to take time.

All points that were expected really. Now, we’ll see what Petraeus can do, away from the politicking of Washington.
