The RAND COIN Scorecard And The Irish War Of Independence
The RAND think tank, last year, came up with a “scorecard” method of reviewing counter-insurgency campaigns. The scorecard ranks a COIN campaign in terms of “good” and “bad” practices that take place by the actual COIN force and the insurgents … Continue reading

Ireland And Iraq: When COIN Works And When It Cant
The Irish Civil War is a conflict that is widely ignored in military circles, outside of the Irish Army, which has always seemed strange to me. The Irish Civil War is that rarest of things: an example of a successful … Continue reading

COIN: Not Dead, Only Sleeping
A lot has been made of the remarks of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates the other day, when he appeared to signal the end of the US’s focus on counter-insurgency and a drawdown on its armed forces. In particular, Gates seemed to draw a … Continue reading

The Junior Officer’s Reading Club by Patrick Hennessey
One of the core archetypes you will find in military based fiction is that of the British officer: uptight, a strict disciplinarian, moustached, traditional, posh, asshole (especially to rankers). It’s not a completely underserved stereotype and it is far from inaccurate in … Continue reading

Counter-Insurgency In Cosmo And Transformers
This is awesome and everyone should read it. A bunch of military figures envision what a Counter-Insurgency themed issue of Cosmopolitan magazine would look like. And from there, I found this hidden gem from Wings Over Iraq, something I had unforgivably … Continue reading

A Response To “Four Days Later”
From Abu Muqawama The man who made this speech had lost his son in Afghanistan four days prior. While that is certainly tragic, and his decision to give the oration regardless should be praised, it does not exempt the content of … Continue reading

Bullet Magnet by Mick Flynn
It’s alright. Not the best military memoir I’ve read, but not the worst either. Flynn is one of the most experienced and decorated soldiers in the British Army and this is his story, from start to finish – Northern Ireland, the … Continue reading

Changing NATO
NATO is changing and its coming 20 years after it should have happened. Since the fall of communism, NATO has found itself increasingly irrelevant, its role as a self-defence pact seen more as a disadvantage then an advantage. The problems: … Continue reading

Took Long Enough: Addendum
Ugh. So, under-representation that the British first-past-the-post system would be proud of, walk-outs, repeated votes needed to elect a President…and all in the first three hours. One wonders how this country will ever be able to function at all.

Took Long Enough
It’s taken a criminally long time for the Iraqi parliament to make a government…and to re-elect the same guy as Prime Minister. This extended drama in the Parliament, just trying to form a government that really cannot be described as … Continue reading
